New pump station built at Mundford Road Reservoir by ECS

22nd November 2023

ECS Engineering Services has completed the construction of a steel portal frame building at Mundford Road Reservoir on behalf of Anglian Water. The new structure will house a booster pump station, delivering potable water from the reservoir to the wider Thetford area.

The 230 m long Mundford Road Reservoir and booster site is located right next to Thetford Railway Station. Anglian Water decided to modernize the site by building a new booster pump station, improving local water supply infrastructure. As an appointed mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, control and automation (MEICA) framework contractor to Anglian Water, ECS was selected to deliver a turnkey project, as it could demonstrate the desired level of construction, design and management (CDM) and health and safety compliance to meet the expectations of Anglian Water.

Leveraging its capabilities as a leading electromechanical services provider with integrated steel fabrication capabilities at its head office – ECS designed and fabricated the entire building in-house. Accredited to provide CE marked structural steelwork to EXC4, the high capacity fabrications department is experienced in supporting critical utilities infrastructure.

ECS constructed the 3D model for the building within Tekla software and collaboratively shared this with the client’s building information modelling (BIM) coordination, ensuring that the completed structure was fully and seamlessly integrated into the entire pump station design.

ECS also managed the complete construction of the building on-site, efficiently carrying out works to limit disturbance to local businesses near the reservoir. Furthermore, ECS managed all the lift planning and crane supervision as well as the activities of the cladding system installer.

To complement the steel frame, ECS also installed external cladding, insulation, doors, louvre vents, flashings, security mesh and rainwater goods. Notably, ECS fitted an electric gantry crane and hoist inside the building, helping to ease and expedite future maintenance work on pumps and associated equipment.

“With our in-house design and fabrications teams, we can blueprint and assemble large steel structures for a variety of uses. Our experience working with Anglian Water and other UK water utilities means we have great experience constructing and modernizing pumping stations,” says Steve Crapper, Precontracts Director at ECS.

Due to this successful project, ECS has extended its relationship with Anglian Water and is commissioned to construct several more pump station buildings associated with the Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA) project.

Other recent pump station projects completed by ECS include renewing the façade of Short Ferry Water Pumping Station on the River Whitham, and the upgrade of multiple pumping stations in the Great Ouse Groundwater Scheme (GOGS).
