Pipework replacement by ECS helps improve reliability at Mythe Water Treatment Works

ECS Engineering Services’ has helped to improve reliability at Severn Trent Water’s Mythe Water Treatment Works with the upgrade of the abstraction basement pipework. Carrying out key parts of the project ahead of a scheduled pump maintenance window, ECS helped to ensure that operations at the facility were restarted quickly.

Located in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, Mythe Water Treatment Works provides drinking water to the local area. Therefore, reliability and equipment availability are core priorities for site operators. One key aspect of the facility is the abstraction basement. The pumps housed here extract water from the River Severn for treatment, so any unforeseen pump downtime could affect local water supply. When it was clear that the cooling service water pipework in the basement would require replacement, Severn Trent Water approached ECS with the request for the project to be delivered to coincide with a prescheduled pump maintenance window.

ECS Engineering Services is a turnkey solutions provider to the water sector, counting government institutions, local authorities and private companies amongst its customers. Managing projects from design to installation, ECS also offers highly responsive and flexible services to minimise equipment downtime, such as critical assets operating at wastewater treatment facilities. Due to these capabilities, Severn Trent Water appointed ECS as a regionwide framework contractor for mechanical services in 2020.

“Our approach was to complete as much unobtrusive work as possible ahead of time while the pumps were still operational,” Steve Crapper, Precontracts Director at ECS explains. “We replaced the pipework to the required specifications, fitting ancillaries such as pressure gauges, but capped it until the planned maintenance window in which we carried out the final connections, testing and commissioning.”

With as much work completed as possible in late November 2021, ECS was then contacted by Severn Trent Water to finish the project on a single day in early December. The significance of this day was that the high lift pumps were scheduled for maintenance between 8am and 4pm that day. This provided a pump shutdown period in which to switch to the new pipework and complete the replacement project.

“We were able to carry out the final connections, conduct required testing and commission the new pipework within the timeframe. This meant that operations at Mythe could be restarted as quickly as possible. Conducting work ahead of the planned shutdown ensured that the upgrade of this critical area in the facility was completed in the most optimal manner,” Steve explains.

With the project completed, ECS received highly positive feedback from project engineers at Severn Trent Water, having been awarded top marks in all areas within the handover document.

Mark Britten at Severn Trent Water said: “The whole project was handled really well. The teams at ECS Engineering Services were professional and delivered a high standard of work, providing excellent technical support. This upgrade project will increase the resilience of Mythe Water Treatment Works for years to come.”
