Mitsubishi Electric’s FX5UC Premium Micro PLC fits highly sophisticated data processing and communication capabilities into an exceptionally small footprint. This diminutive powerhouse of a machine controller is therefore ideal for cutting-edge Smart Factory applications and conforms to the drive for lighter-weight, more space-efficient equipment.

In order to remain competitive, it is generally accepted that industries should adopt lean manufacturing strategies to improve process efficiency. A key action can be to reduce part count, i.e. the number of components in an assembly or system. This is particularly challenging when it comes to highly accurate cartesian coordinate (linear) motion applications. In these cases, machine builders would often need to use both PLCs and computer numerical controllers (CNCs) in order to fully manage movement within the machine – until now.

A leading pharmaceutical manufacturer specialising in asthma inhalers has transformed its in-line testing operations thanks to an automated quality control solution developed by Mitsubishi Electric and leading system integrator Optimal Industrial Automation. The innovative system uses two Selective Compliance Articulated Robot Arms (SCARA) and system-matched components, such as a MELSEC-iQ platform PLC and MAPS SCADA software.

Applying new technology to a physical process or manufacturing system is an essential part of progress, however the practical side of implementing the latest Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Smart Technology solutions is bringing its own unique challenges. That in turn is leading to new automation solutions.

Sitting on the tube during a commute few of us would think about the importance of safety redundancy in automation systems unless it is specified as part of a project we are working on. Automated Safety Instrumented Systems (SISs) however are becoming increasingly prevalent, as they can be used to prevent or mitigate hazardous events in a range of different situations.

At this year’s Drives & Controls show, Mitsubishi Electric is focussing on practical solutions that allow manufacturing companies and machine builders to realise the real advantages of smart automation systems.
5th February 2020
Robots are becoming increasingly easy to use, more economical and suitable for a higher number of industrial applications. As human operators and robots increasingly share a common space in the manufacturing environment, the choice between a collaborative or cooperative machine is naturally being given more consideration.
